Bute Gifts – A Little Island Spark That Grew

Bute Gifts – A Little Island Spark That Grew

When I first started Bute Gifts, it was really just me, my artwork, and a simple idea — to share a bit of the Isle of Bute’s magic with others. I’ve always loved the island — its colours, wildlife, sea air, and that feeling you get when you step off the ferry and everything slows down a little. It’s the kind of place that seeps into your imagination, and before long, it finds its way into your work.

Back when I started, I was experimenting with digital art and photography, trying to capture the light and spirit of Bute in a way that felt true. My first products were small — local prints, coasters, and gifts featuring scenes I’d painted or photographed myself. There was no big plan then, just a creative flow that kept me busy (and happy!) at the kitchen table.

Over time, Bute Gifts began to take on a life of its own. Locals and visitors started to recognise the designs, and before I knew it, people were coming back to find new things. That’s when I realised I was building something meaningful — not just a shop, but a little reflection of island life.

Everything about Bute Gifts is inspired by where I live — the rolling hills, the harbour, the character of Rothesay, and the people who make this place what it is. Each design starts with a story or a moment I’ve experienced here. I still do all the creative work myself, from design to production, and that’s something I take a lot of pride in.

If you haven’t already, have a wee leap over and have a look at the site — Bute Gifts — you’ll find my original artwork, photography, and a collection of island-inspired gifts made with care.

It’s a small, independent business built from the heart, and I think that’s what makes it special. Living on Bute, I’m constantly surrounded by inspiration — from misty mornings to bright seaside afternoons — and Bute Gifts has become my way of sharing that with the world.
